GLOBAL & REGIONAL M&A MOMENTUM
M&A TRENDS
Global M&A on Record Pace; Southeast Asia Sees Strongest H1 Since 2022
Global M&A deals reached a record USD 3.2 trillion in the first half of 2026, a 44% increase year-on-year, according to J.P. Morgan. North America accounted for over 65% of the total, but Southeast Asia also delivered its strongest first-half performance since 2022, driven by domestic strategic buyers in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
For Indonesian business owners, this momentum signals a favorable window for M&A. With the JCI at 6,522 and the rupiah stable at Rp17,685, conditions are supportive for both inbound and outbound deals. The rise in mega-deals globally suggests that strategic buyers are willing to pay premiums for quality assets, and Indonesian companies with strong fundamentals may find themselves in a seller's market.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The robust M&A climate creates opportunities for Indonesian firms to either divest non-core assets or pursue strategic acquisitions, with JBP positioned to advise on cross-border transactions.
SOUTHEAST ASIA INVESTMENT
Vietnam's Shift to Higher-Value Investment Signals Regional Opportunity
Vietnam is transitioning from low-cost manufacturing to higher-value investment and M&A, as highlighted by KPMG. The country's FDI inflows surged 58% to USD 38 billion in the first seven months of 2026, with a focus on technology, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.
This shift mirrors trends across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, where data center investments are expected to reach USD 35 billion by 2031. For Indonesian businesses, this regional evolution opens avenues for cross-border partnerships and investments, particularly in digital infrastructure and high-tech sectors.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: Indonesian companies can leverage this regional shift to explore strategic alliances or acquisitions in Vietnam's emerging high-value sectors, with JBP facilitating cross-border M&A.
INDONESIAN M&A AND CAPITAL RAISING
PRIVATE EQUITY / FINTECH
SBI Holdings to Acquire 20% Stake in Ajaib at USD 1.35 Billion Valuation
Japan's SBI Holdings has announced a USD 270 million investment to acquire a 20% stake in Indonesian online investment platform Ajaib, valuing the company at USD 1.35 billion. This marks one of the largest fintech deals in Indonesia this year, underscoring the attractiveness of the country's digital financial services sector.
The deal highlights the increasing interest of foreign strategic investors in Indonesian tech startups. With the rupiah stable and the JCI holding above 6,500, investor confidence remains strong, creating a favorable environment for similar transactions in the fintech and digital economy space.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The Ajaib-SBI deal demonstrates the appetite for Indonesian fintech assets; JBP can advise local fintech founders on structuring similar transactions and identifying strategic investors.
CROSS-BORDER M&A
Chandra Asri Acquires Cycle & Carriage for Rp3.68 Trillion
PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (TPIA) has signed a Conditional Sales and Purchase Agreement to acquire the automotive business of Cycle & Carriage in Singapore and Malaysia. The deal, valued at Rp3.68 trillion, marks a significant cross-border expansion for the Indonesian petrochemical company.
This acquisition reflects a trend of Indonesian conglomerates expanding regionally. With global M&A activity at record levels, Indonesian companies are increasingly looking beyond domestic borders for growth opportunities. The deal also highlights the importance of regulatory compliance and strategic advisory in complex cross-border transactions.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: Chandra Asri's move demonstrates the potential for Indonesian corporates to pursue regional expansion; JBP can provide advisory services for similar cross-border acquisitions.
REGULATORY AND MARKET DEVELOPMENTS
INFRASTRUCTURE / DIGITAL ECONOMY
Indonesia's Open-Access Fiber Grid Launch Signals Infrastructure Investment Boom
Indonesia has launched an 86,000-km open-access fiber grid, with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison completing the carve-out of its fiber infrastructure into a standalone entity. The platform, now majority-owned by Arsari Group, is expected to drive digital connectivity and attract further investment in the country's digital infrastructure.
This development aligns with the broader trend of data center investment in Southeast Asia, projected to reach USD 35 billion by 2031. For Indonesian business owners, this represents opportunities in related sectors such as cloud services, cybersecurity, and digital content, as well as potential M&A targets in the telecom and infrastructure space.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The fiber grid rollout creates opportunities for M&A in the digital infrastructure sector; JBP can assist clients in identifying and evaluating investment or partnership opportunities.
MACRO & POLICY
Bank Indonesia Governor Approved, Rupiah Stable Amid Global Uncertainty
Destry Damayanti has secured lawmakers' approval to become Bank Indonesia Governor, providing policy continuity. The rupiah remains stable around Rp17,685 per USD, supported by a slight appreciation trend, even as global geopolitical tensions drive safe-haven demand for the dollar.
For Indonesian businesses, the stable currency and ongoing policy clarity reduce uncertainty for long-term investment planning. The 10-year Indonesian government bond yield stands at 7.06%, offering attractive returns relative to U.S. Treasuries, which could continue to attract foreign capital inflows.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: With a stable rupiah and clear monetary policy direction, Indonesian companies can confidently pursue M&A and capital raising activities; JBP provides strategic guidance in this favorable macro environment.
That is all for today. If any of these stories opens a door for your business, I am happy to talk through the implications.
Warm regards,
Akmal Adrianza
