INDONESIA MARKET & POLICY

INDONESIA CAPITAL MARKETS

MSCI Downgrade Fears Trigger Sharp Selloff in Indonesian Assets

Indonesian stocks, bonds, and the rupiah came under intense pressure this week after MSCI warned of a possible two-step downgrade of the country's market classification. The Jakarta Composite Index fell as much as 5.4% on Monday, extending a 12% plunge from Friday, while the 10-year bond yield jumped to a four-month high. Goldman Sachs estimates that a full removal from MSCI emerging-market indexes could trigger approximately US$5.6 billion in passive outflows.

The selloff, which has made Indonesia the world's worst-performing stock market this year, is testing investor confidence even as the JCI sits at 4,997 and the rupiah trades near Rp17,943 per dollar. Officials are set to meet with MSCI in the coming days, and the outcome will shape near-term capital flows and valuation benchmarks for Indonesian assets.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: The dislocation creates a window for strategic buyers and private equity firms to acquire quality Indonesian assets at depressed valuations, while sellers may need to reassess timing and structure; advisory mandates for cross-border carve-outs and take-privates are likely to rise.

SOVEREIGN WEALTH & DEAL ACTIVITY

Danantara and INA Complete Strategic Investment in Chandra Asri EDC Project

Danantara Investment Management (DIM) and the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) have finalized a strategic investment in Chandra Asri's CA-EDC project, according to local reports. The transaction underscores the growing role of state-linked funds in financing large-scale industrial projects and signals continued appetite for petrochemical and infrastructure assets despite market volatility.

The deal also highlights Danantara's expanding mandate as a catalyst for foreign and domestic co-investment. With the JCI under pressure, such anchor investments can provide valuation support and confidence for other dealmakers active in Indonesia's real assets and manufacturing sectors.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: The Danantara-INA mandate creates a template for co-investment structures in Indonesian industrials, opening advisory opportunities for firms that can arrange syndicated deals and bridge sovereign capital with strategic operators.

GLOBAL M&A & PRIVATE CAPITAL

GLOBAL M&A TRENDS

Global M&A Volume Up 28% but Q3 Slowdown Signals Caution

Global M&A activity reached US$3.9 trillion in the first nine months of 2026, up 28% year over year, according to Investment Executive. However, Q3 volume fell to US$993.4 billion, below the US$1 trillion mark, and 57 mega deals accounted for US$1.4 trillion of the year-to-date total, indicating that growth is concentrated in large transactions.

Regional performance was uneven: U.S. deal value rose 38% to US$2 trillion, Europe surged 54%, while Asia-Pacific grew just 11%. The data suggests a market that remains robust but is becoming more selective, with financing conditions and geopolitical factors weighing on mid-market activity.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: The concentration of value in mega deals and slower Q3 momentum create a favorable environment for mid-market advisers to originate proprietary transactions and advise on bolt-on acquisitions as larger players digest their portfolios.

PRIVATE CREDIT & DISTRESSED DEBT

Private Credit Stress Emerges as CoreWeave Debt Tests AI Financing Boom

Private credit's role in financing AI infrastructure faced a major test this week as CoreWeave's bonds fell to distressed levels, with the cost of insuring its debt against default climbing to about 1,200 basis points. The company carries approximately US$50 billion in debt, making it a key bellwether for the intersection of private credit and the AI buildout.

Separately, Moody's reported that the default rate among 607 private credit borrowers stood at 4% in the 12 months to June, rising to 5.8% when payment-in-kind amendments and maturity extensions are included. The findings suggest that stress in private credit may be understated, with implications for lenders and investors exposed to AI-related and leveraged credits.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: Rising distress in private credit creates opportunities for special situations funds and distressed M&A advisers to acquire assets or provide rescue financing, particularly in technology and infrastructure sectors where valuations are being repriced.

SOUTHEAST ASIA & SECTOR WATCH

SOUTHEAST ASIA FDI

Vietnam FDI Surges 55% in 2026, Intensifying Regional Competition

Vietnam registered US$40.6 billion in foreign direct investment in the first eight months of 2026, a 55.4% increase year over year, with disbursed capital reaching US$17.25 billion, the highest in five years. The surge positions Vietnam as a leading destination for supply-chain diversification, on par with Indonesia in terms of FDI scale, according to Vietnam.vn.

The report notes that incentives are shifting toward targeted, results-based approaches, as seen in Malaysia, and that Southeast Asian economies still maintain regulatory restrictions on foreign investment above the OECD average. For Indonesia, the data underscores the need to enhance competitiveness and streamline investment frameworks to attract similar capital flows.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: The FDI momentum in Vietnam and across Southeast Asia creates cross-border M&A and joint-venture advisory opportunities for firms that can help Indonesian corporates expand regionally or partner with foreign investors seeking diversified exposure.

COMMODITIES & MINING

Chinese Nickel Producers Plan Output Cuts in Indonesia as Oversupply Bites

Major Chinese nickel producers are advancing plans to cut production at their high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) plants in Indonesia, according to Bloomberg, as falling metal prices and rising operating costs pressure the industry. The discussions focus on production cuts based on existing operations, reflecting a global nickel surplus expected in 2026.

The move comes as India's state-run NMDC put its planned nickel foray on hold, citing oversupply concerns linked to Indonesia, which accounts for more than 60% of global nickel output. The developments signal a period of consolidation and rationalization in the nickel sector, with implications for Indonesian downstream policies and asset valuations.

MY PERSPECTIVE

JBP Advisory Angle: Production cuts and consolidation in Indonesian nickel present M&A opportunities for strategic buyers and investors to acquire distressed or non-core assets, while advisory mandates for restructuring and joint-venture renegotiations are likely to increase.
