GLOBAL M&A MOMENTUM
GLOBAL M&A
Global M&A Hits New High as Mega Deals Dominate and Execution Accelerates
Global M&A activity reached a new high in the third quarter of 2026, driven by mega deals and faster deal execution, according to WTW. Quick deals completed within 70 days accounted for 43% of transactions, up from 35% in the previous quarter, while complex cross-sector deals rose to 35%. Year-to-date deal volume increased 16.1% to 614 transactions compared to the same period in 2025.
The acceleration reflects an increasingly dynamic M&A environment shaped by AI-driven transformation, geopolitical tensions, and macroeconomic uncertainty. However, advisers caution that speed must not come at the expense of rigorous due diligence, as slower transactions underperformed by 11.6 points.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: This dealmaking surge creates opportunities for Indonesian sellers and acquirers to engage early with counterparties, as faster timelines reward well-prepared parties with clear diligence narratives.
CAPITAL MARKETS
Global Equity Issuance Surpasses $1 Trillion as AI Infrastructure Drives Mega Deals
Global equity capital markets issuance has surpassed $1 trillion through the first nine months of 2026, putting the year on pace to rival the record 2021 period. AI infrastructure is the dominant force behind the market, with mega-deals involving companies such as Alphabet and SpaceX driving the numbers, according to ION's Head of Global Equity Capital Markets.
The concentration of technology deals at the top of the market signals sustained investor appetite for large-scale, innovation-driven transactions. This trend is likely to influence capital raising strategies across both developed and emerging markets.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: Indonesian companies in AI-adjacent sectors or digital infrastructure may find a receptive window for capital raising or strategic partnerships with global players seeking exposure to Southeast Asia's growing tech ecosystem.
SOUTHEAST ASIA DEAL ACTIVITY
CROSS-BORDER M&A
AkzoNobel to Sell Southeast Asia Business to Nippon Paint for $1.35 Billion
AkzoNobel has agreed to sell its Southeast Asia business to Nippon Paint for $1.35 billion, marking one of the region's largest cross-border deals this year. The transaction reflects ongoing consolidation in the paints and coatings sector amid muted demand and higher oil prices.
The deal underscores Japan's continued interest in Southeast Asian assets, particularly in established manufacturing and consumer-facing businesses. It also highlights the strategic value of regional platforms for acquirers seeking to expand distribution and market share.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: This transaction signals a robust market for Indonesian coatings, chemicals, and building materials assets, with Japanese and regional strategic buyers likely to pursue similar platform acquisitions in the coming months.
PRIVATE EQUITY
CIMB Private Equity Invests $25 Million in 7-Eleven Indonesia
CIMB Private Equity has acquired a 10% stake in PT Modern Internasional Tbk (MDRN), the operator of the 7-Eleven convenience store franchise in Indonesia, for approximately $25 million. The investment was made through a subscription of newly issued shares, with proceeds earmarked for business expansion.
This deal highlights continued private equity interest in Indonesia's consumer retail sector, particularly in businesses with strong brand recognition and scalable franchise models. The investment also reflects confidence in domestic consumption growth despite broader macroeconomic headwinds.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: This investment opens doors for advisory mandates in Indonesia's consumer retail and franchise sectors, as PE firms seek similar growth-stage opportunities with established brands and expansion potential.
INDONESIA CAPITAL MARKETS & POLICY
SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND
Danantara Signals Readiness to Buy Domestic Stocks During Market Pressure
Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, has indicated it may increase investments in domestic equities during periods of market pressure, provided the moves are deemed investment-positive. The fund is also exercising caution on AI exposure and is discussing whether to retain a portion of dividends typically paid to the government.
The statement comes as the JCI trades at 6,094 and the rupiah hovers around Rp17,879 per USD, reflecting ongoing external pressures. Danantara's willingness to act as a stabilizer could support market sentiment and create opportunities for co-investment.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: Danantara's active stance creates potential co-investment and advisory opportunities for domestic and foreign firms looking to partner on Indonesian equities or strategic assets during periods of market volatility.
COMMODITIES & POLICY
Indonesia Plans Moratorium on New Partly Processed Nickel Plants
Indonesia is discussing a moratorium on new nickel processing facilities that produce partly processed metals, according to the senior minister overseeing mining. The plan aims to prop up prices of nickel products and encourage deeper downstream industrialization.
The policy shift could reshape investment flows in Indonesia's nickel sector, which has attracted significant Chinese and global capital in recent years. Existing projects may benefit from reduced competition, while new entrants face higher barriers.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: This policy development creates M&A opportunities for existing nickel processors seeking to consolidate or partner with downstream players, as well as for advisers guiding foreign investors through the changing regulatory landscape.
That is all for today. If any of these stories opens a door for your business, I am happy to talk through the implications.
Warm regards,
Akmal Adrianza
