INDONESIA CAPITAL MARKETS
INDONESIA CAPITAL MARKETS
MSCI Exclusion Risk Weighs on Indonesian Equities and Rupiah
Indonesia faces a rare potential exclusion from MSCI emerging-market indexes, a move that could cut the country off from a significant pool of global capital. With more than USD 1.8 trillion in assets benchmarked to MSCI's EM indexes, the decision carries substantial weight for foreign flows into Indonesian equities and the rupiah, which has already weakened to Rp17,943 per US dollar. The JCI stands at 5,185, reflecting investor caution amid the uncertainty.
The MSCI review comes as Indonesia's commodity exports—thermal coal, palm oil, nickel, and copper—remain a key support for the economy, though as a net oil importer the country is also exposed to elevated crude prices at USD 97.77 per barrel. The outcome of the MSCI assessment will be a critical determinant of near-term portfolio flows and valuation levels for Indonesian listed companies.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The MSCI review creates a window for strategic buyers to engage Indonesian listed companies on take-private or strategic stake transactions, particularly in commodity and consumer sectors where valuations may come under pressure.
SOVEREIGN WEALTH & INVESTMENT
Danantara and INA Complete Strategic Investment in Chandra Asri Petrochemical Plant
Danantara Investment Management (DIM) and the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) have completed a strategic investment in a Chandra Asri petrochemical plant project, according to Bisnis. The transaction underscores the growing role of Indonesia's sovereign wealth vehicles in directing capital toward downstream industrial projects. The deal also highlights coordination between state-backed investors and private sector partners in scaling domestic processing capacity.
With the rupiah at Rp17,943 and global energy prices elevated, the petrochemical sector remains a strategic priority for import substitution and export diversification. The involvement of both Danantara and INA signals a template for future co-investment structures that could attract foreign strategic partners seeking exposure to Indonesia's downstream ambitions.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The Danantara-INA co-investment model creates a repeatable structure for cross-border advisory mandates, particularly for foreign petrochemical and industrial firms seeking minority or joint-venture positions alongside Indonesian sovereign capital.
GLOBAL M&A AND CREDIT TRENDS
GLOBAL M&A
Global M&A Dealmaking Falls in Q3 After Record-Breaking Start to 2026
Global M&A activity declined in the third quarter of 2026 following a record-breaking first half, according to A&O Shearman's Global M&A Snapshot. The slowdown reflects a reassessment of growth assumptions and tighter financing conditions, with buyers pushing back on aggressive valuations. The report notes that shareholders are weighing the certainty of consideration today against the prospect of management delivering on business plans over time.
The Q3 pullback follows a period of intense dealmaking, and the pause may create opportunities for well-capitalized strategic buyers to engage targets that had previously expected higher valuations. In Indonesia, the JCI at 5,185 and a rupiah at Rp17,943 add complexity to cross-border pricing negotiations, but also open room for creative deal structures.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The Q3 slowdown creates a buyer-friendly window for Indonesian conglomerates and regional private equity funds to pursue bolt-on acquisitions in Southeast Asia, where valuation expectations are adjusting faster than in developed markets.
PRIVATE CREDIT & DISTRESSED DEBT
CoreWeave Bond Rout Tests Private Credit's AI Financing Boom
CoreWeave's bonds have fallen to distressed levels, with its 9.75% bond due 2031 yielding 15.78% and credit default swap spreads hitting distress levels, according to Reuters and CNBC. The company carries over USD 50 billion in debt linked to AI infrastructure buildout, making it a bellwether for private credit's expanding role in financing data centers and chips. Investors are demanding greater compensation for AI-related credit risk, and the stress is prompting a broader repricing of AI infrastructure debt.
The CoreWeave situation is being watched as a canary in the coal mine for private credit exposure to the AI buildout. With global growth projected at around 3.1% in 2026 and energy costs elevated, the cost of financing capital-intensive technology projects is rising, which could spill over into Asian credit markets and affect borrowing costs for Indonesian infrastructure and technology firms.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The AI credit repricing creates advisory opportunities for distressed M&A and liability management mandates, particularly for Indonesian infrastructure and technology companies with USD-denominated debt that may need to restructure or bring in strategic equity partners.
SOUTHEAST ASIA DEALMAKING & FDI
FDI & SOUTHEAST ASIA
Developing Asia Attracted About 40% of Global FDI in 2025
Developing Asia attracted approximately 40% of global foreign direct investment in 2025, according to UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2026. The share underscores the region's growing weight in global capital allocation, even as most developing countries struggle to match the subsidy programs of major economies. UNCTAD officials noted that realistic entry points and stronger foundations are needed to compete for investment.
The FDI concentration in developing Asia, combined with Japan and Korea's expanding capital flows into ASEAN across manufacturing, EVs, and AI, positions Southeast Asia as a key destination for cross-border investment. Indonesia, as Southeast Asia's largest economy, stands to benefit, though the rupiah at Rp17,943 and the MSCI review add near-term uncertainty to foreign capital inflows.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The FDI shift toward developing Asia creates inbound advisory mandates for JBP to connect Japanese and Korean strategic investors with Indonesian family-owned businesses and conglomerates seeking capital and technology partnerships.
SOUTHEAST ASIA IPO
Philippines' GCash IPO to Raise USD 1.5 Billion at USD 10.7 Billion Valuation
Globe Fintech Innovations (Mynt), the operator of GCash, is set to raise USD 1.5 billion at a USD 10.7 billion valuation in its initial public offering, with listing expected on October 20, 2026, according to Caproasia. The IPO represents one of Southeast Asia's largest fintech listings and signals strong investor appetite for digital financial services in the region. The offering was upsized from earlier plans of USD 1 billion at an USD 8 billion valuation.
The GCash IPO is a landmark transaction for ASEAN capital markets and could catalyze further fintech listings and M&A activity in the region. For Indonesian fintech and digital financial services companies, the successful pricing provides a valuation benchmark and may encourage strategic investors to revisit Southeast Asian digital finance assets.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The GCash IPO provides a valuation reference for Indonesian fintech assets, creating a window for M&A advisory mandates involving digital payment and financial services companies seeking strategic partnerships or pre-IPO funding.
