INDONESIA CAPITAL MARKETS
MARKET ACCESS
MSCI Proposes Downgrade of Indonesia to Standalone Status
MSCI has proposed removing Indonesia from its emerging-market indexes, citing insufficient evidence of implementation and failure to sanction stock manipulation. The move could trigger further outflows from a market already under pressure, with the JCI at 5,185 and the rupiah at Rp18,000 per dollar. More than USD1.8 trillion in assets are benchmarked to MSCI emerging-market indexes.
The potential exclusion comes as Indonesia processes seven prospective IPOs, with healthcare companies dominating the pipeline. A downgrade would raise the cost of capital for Indonesian issuers and complicate cross-border deal structuring.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The MSCI review creates a window for advisers to help Indonesian companies access alternative capital sources, including private placements and strategic partnerships, ahead of any index reclassification.
SOVEREIGN WEALTH
Danantara and INA Complete Chandra Asri Investment
Danantara Investment Management and Indonesia Investment Authority have completed a strategic investment in Chandra Asri's plant project. The transaction underscores the sovereign wealth funds' role in financing large-scale industrial projects and supporting national downstreaming priorities.
The deal follows Danantara's USD2.5 billion equity investment into JBS Australia, signed in August 2026, demonstrating an active pipeline of cross-border and domestic transactions.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The Danantara-INA mandate signals advisory opportunities for firms with expertise in structuring co-investments and project finance for industrial assets, particularly in petrochemicals and downstream processing.
GLOBAL M&A AND PRIVATE CREDIT
GLOBAL M&A
Global M&A Dealmaking Falls in Q3 After Record Start to 2026
Global M&A deal value held steady in September but was down 21% year-over-year, rounding out a subdued quarter following a record-breaking start to 2026. The slowdown reflects tighter financing conditions and geopolitical uncertainty, with the S&P 500 at 7,659.44 and WTI crude at USD99.02 per barrel.
Despite the pullback, Southeast Asia remains a bright spot, with greenfield FDI in Indonesia rising 34% to USD133 billion over the five years to 2025, according to industry data.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The divergence between global M&A slowdown and resilient Southeast Asian FDI creates opportunities for cross-border advisers to bridge international buyers with Indonesian assets in sectors benefiting from China Plus One.
PRIVATE CREDIT
Private Credit Stress Tests AI Financing Boom as CoreWeave Bonds Turn Distressed
CoreWeave's bonds fell to distressed levels this week, with the cost of insuring its debt against default climbing to about 1,200 basis points. The company has about USD50 billion of debt, making it one of the largest borrowers linking private credit to the AI buildout. Moody's data shows private credit default rates rising to 5.8% when including distressed exchanges.
The stress raises questions about how lenders are pricing AI infrastructure risk, with potential spillover effects on financing conditions for technology-related deals.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The private credit stress in AI infrastructure may prompt lenders to diversify into Southeast Asian credit opportunities, creating advisory openings for structuring alternative financing for Indonesian corporates.
SOUTHEAST ASIA INVESTMENT LANDSCAPE
FDI TRENDS
ASEAN FDI Inflows Exceed USD200 Billion Annually Since 2021
FDI in ASEAN has been exceptionally strong since 2021, with annual inflows exceeding USD200 billion compared to a previous decade average of less than USD130 billion. The ASEAN Investment Report 2025 tallies 2024 inflows at USD226 billion, up 8.5% while global FDI fell 11%.
Indonesia saw greenfield FDI rise 34% to USD133 billion in the five years to 2025, benefiting from the China Plus One strategy as multinationals diversify supply chains.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The sustained FDI momentum in ASEAN creates a pipeline of inbound M&A and joint-venture opportunities for advisers with cross-border capabilities, particularly in manufacturing and resource processing.
CAPITAL MARKETS
Philippines GCash IPO to Raise USD1.5 Billion at USD10.7 Billion Valuation
Globe Fintech Innovations (Mynt), operator of GCash, is set to list on October 20, 2026, raising USD1.5 billion at a USD10.7 billion valuation. The IPO was upsized from an earlier target of USD1 billion at an USD8 billion valuation, reflecting strong investor demand for Southeast Asian fintech assets.
The listing is one of the region's largest technology IPOs and signals renewed appetite for digital economy champions.
MY PERSPECTIVE
JBP Advisory Angle: The GCash IPO demonstrates robust investor appetite for Southeast Asian digital assets, opening advisory opportunities for Indonesian fintech and technology companies considering similar capital-raising exercises.
